- Choose non-woven or vinyl-on-non-woven wallpaper for Indian homes: stable, wipeable, strips off dry.
- A standard roll is 0.53 × 10.05 m, about 57 sq ft; plan 45–50 sq ft of wall per roll after waste.
- Buy every roll from one batch number, plus a spare for repairs.
- The wall must be dry (plaster moisture under about 15%), smooth and primed.
- Avoid unventilated bathrooms, kitchen splash zones and external walls with a seepage history.
Wallpaper is the fastest way to bring pattern into a room: a bedroom wall can be transformed in a day with almost no dust. Modern papers are also far tougher than the paper of the past. The decisions that matter are the base material, the roll count and the state of the wall. Prices are covered separately in wallpaper cost per square foot; this guide is part of the wall design guide.
Wallpaper types by material
| Type | Built as | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-woven | Blend of cellulose and synthetic fibres | Breathable, stable, strips off dry, paste-the-wall installation | Plain non-woven marks more easily than vinyl |
| Vinyl on non-woven | Vinyl face on a non-woven base | Wipeable, durable, stable | Less breathable; needs a dry wall |
| Solid vinyl | Thicker vinyl face | Very tough, scrubbable | Can trap moisture on poor walls |
| Paper (pulp) | Printed paper | Cheap, matt, good colours | Stretches when wet, tears, stains |
| Fabric and grasscloth | Textile or natural fibre on paper | Rich texture, absorbs sound | Hard to clean; fades in sun |
| Peel-and-stick | Self-adhesive vinyl film | No paste, removable | Thin; lifts in heat and humidity |
How many rolls you need
A European-size roll, common in India, is 0.53 m wide and 10.05 m long: about 5.3 m² or 57 sq ft. Wider rolls (0.70 m and 1.06 m) also exist; check the label.
- Measure the wall: width × height, in feet. A 10 × 9 ft wall is 90 sq ft.
- Subtract large openings only (doors, big windows); ignore switches.
- Divide by 45–50 sq ft per roll to allow for trimming and pattern matching. Use 45 for large repeats.
- Round up and buy one extra roll from the same batch for repairs.
Batch (lot) numbers matter: two batches of the same design can differ slightly in colour. Check every roll's batch before hanging.
Preparing the wall
- Dry. No active damp; new plaster cured for several weeks. A moisture meter reading under about 15% on plaster is a reasonable threshold.
- Smooth. Fill and sand; wallpaper shows bumps, especially vinyl with a sheen.
- Primed. Apply a wallpaper primer (sizing). It helps adhesion and makes later removal easier.
- Switch plates off, to be refitted over the paper.
Where wallpaper works, and where it does not
| Good places | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Bed-back walls, dining walls, TV walls, study nooks, ceilings of a niche, inside open shelves | Bathrooms without ventilation, kitchen splash zones, external walls with seepage history, walls behind a geyser or water line |
Choosing a pattern
- Scale to the room: large patterns suit large walls seen from a distance; small rooms look calmer with small or tonal patterns.
- Vertical patterns raise a low ceiling; horizontal stripes widen a narrow room.
- Colour: take the wallpaper's background colour for the other walls, so the feature wall belongs. The bedroom colour guide helps.
- Pattern repeat: a large drop repeat wastes more paper; factor it into the roll count.
Wallpaper, texture or panelling?
Wallpaper brings pattern and colour quickly and at moderate cost. Texture paint brings relief and is better on passages and exteriors. Panelling costs more but hides wiring and takes knocks. In many rooms the best result combines two: panelling on the TV section, wallpaper or texture around it.
Reading a wallpaper label
| Label item | What it tells you | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Washability symbol | Spongeable, washable or scrubbable | Washable or better for living rooms; scrubbable for kids' rooms |
| Light-fastness | Resistance to fading | Good or very good for sunny walls |
| Paste the wall / paste the paper | Installation method | Paste-the-wall (non-woven) is quicker and neater |
| Pattern match and repeat | Straight, offset or free match; repeat in cm | Large offset repeats waste more paper |
| Removal | Dry strippable, peelable or wet removal | Dry strippable makes future changes easy |
| Batch / lot number | Production run | All rolls the same |
Humidity and Indian cities
Wallpaper fails in India for one reason above all: moisture in the wall. In Bengaluru's mild climate, a dry internal wall rarely gives trouble. In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, walls can "sweat" during the monsoon, and external walls with hairline cracks let rain in. Practical rules:
- Prefer internal walls; avoid walls shared with bathrooms or a terrace.
- Use an adhesive with a fungicide, and vinyl-on-non-woven papers.
- Leave the room ventilated or air-conditioned during the first week while the adhesive cures.
- In very humid months, run a dehumidifier or AC dry mode in closed rooms.
Worked example: a bedroom feature wall
| Item | Detail | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Wall | 12 × 9 ft = 108 sq ft | — |
| Rolls | 108 ÷ 47 ≈ 2.3 → 3 + 1 spare = 4 rolls | — |
| Wallpaper | Vinyl-on-non-woven, mid-range | ₹8,000–16,000 |
| Wall preparation | Fill, sand, wallpaper primer | ₹1,200–2,500 |
| Installation | Labour and adhesive | ₹2,000–4,000 |
| Total | Before GST | ₹11,200–22,500 |

Installation, step by step
- Switch off power and remove switch plates.
- Prime the wall and let it dry.
- Draw a vertical plumb line for the first drop, usually from the room's focal point or a corner.
- Cut drops with 50 mm extra top and bottom, matching the pattern.
- Paste the wall (non-woven) or the paper (paper and some vinyls), as the label says.
- Hang, smooth from the centre outward with a plastic smoother, and butt joints tightly (no overlaps).
- Trim at ceiling and skirting with a sharp blade, changing blades often.
- Wipe paste off the face immediately with a damp sponge.
Wallpaper ideas beyond the bed wall
- Ceiling of a dining or pooja niche: a small, unexpected area of pattern.
- Inside open shelves or the back of a crockery unit.
- Kids' rooms: washable murals at child height, plain above.
- Study backdrop: a textured grasscloth-look vinyl behind a desk for video calls.
- Powder room with good ventilation: bold pattern in a small space.
Removing wallpaper
Dry-strippable non-woven papers peel off in full lengths, leaving the wall ready to paint. Vinyl-on-non-woven papers usually peel the vinyl face first; the backing then soaks off with water. Paper wallpapers need scoring and steaming. Removal is far easier if the wall was primed before hanging, which is why primer is worth the small extra cost.
Before you decide
- Is the wall internal and dry, with no shared bathroom or terrace above?
- Is the base non-woven or vinyl-on-non-woven?
- Have you calculated rolls with pattern repeat, and bought one spare from the same batch?
- Does the label say dry-strippable, so a future change is easy?
Terms explained
- Non-woven
- A base made of bonded cellulose and synthetic fibres that does not stretch when pasted and peels off dry.
- Drop
- One vertical length of wallpaper cut from the roll to the height of the wall.
- Straight match
- The pattern lines up horizontally on every drop, so drops can be cut one after another.
- Offset (drop) match
- The pattern on each drop is shifted by half a repeat, which uses more paper.
- Pattern repeat
- The vertical distance before a pattern starts again; larger repeats waste more paper per drop.
- Sizing (wallpaper primer)
- A coat that seals the wall so paste grips evenly and the paper can be removed later without damaging the plaster.
- Batch number
- The production run printed on each roll. Rolls from different batches can differ slightly in colour.
Prices for every type are in wallpaper cost per sq ft; colour pairing for the rest of the room is in bedroom colour combinations.

Frequently asked questions
What do the symbols on a wallpaper label mean?
They describe washability (a wave: spongeable or washable; a wave with a brush: scrubbable), light-fastness, how to paste (paste the wall or paste the paper), pattern match (straight or offset) and how it comes off (dry strippable or peelable).
How long does wallpaper installation take?
One feature wall usually takes half a day to a day after the wall is ready. Allow a day before for wall repairs and primer to dry.
Can wallpaper be fixed on gypsum board or plywood?
Yes. Prime gypsum board first so the paper can later be removed without tearing the board surface, and seal plywood so it does not stain the paper.
Which type of wallpaper is best for Indian homes?
Non-woven and vinyl-on-non-woven papers. They do not stretch or shrink when pasted, resist humidity better than paper wallpaper, and strip off dry. Use solid vinyl in high-wear areas and kids' rooms, and avoid fabric and grasscloth near kitchens.
How long does wallpaper last?
A good vinyl or non-woven wallpaper on a dry, primed wall lasts 8–15 years. Edges near switches and doors, and walls with hidden damp, are where it fails first.
Can wallpaper be used in a humid city like Mumbai or Chennai?
Yes, with vinyl-on-non-woven papers, an anti-fungal adhesive and a dry wall. Avoid external walls with any seepage history and rooms without ventilation. Run AC or a dehumidifier in very humid months.
Is peel-and-stick wallpaper any good?
It suits rented homes, cupboards and small areas because it removes without water. It is thinner, shows wall flaws and can lift in heat and humidity, so it is not a substitute for pasted wallpaper on main walls.
Can you paint over wallpaper?
It is possible with a suitable primer, but it usually shows the seams and texture and makes later removal harder. Stripping the paper and painting the wall is the better route.
